The Rohingya Genocide

▪️The persecution against the Muslim Rohingya of Rakhine State traces back to 1977 when the Burmese government under Ne Win unilaterally stripped the entire community of their citizenship. In 2014, the government started issuing National Verification Cards (NVC) to the Rohingya that identified them as foreigners with no rights to property, work, or freedom of movement. 

▪️The genocide itself began in October, 2016 when the military junta began a campaign of violence against the Rohingya under the guise of conducting a “military crackdown” on terrorist groups in Rakhine State. Finally, on August 25, 2017, the Junta attacked again, this time more brutal than ever before, burning people and villages, and subjecting them to unimaginable horrors.

In fear for their lives, 723,000 Rohingya fled Rakhine state across the Naf river into Bangladesh, where they have been interned in the world's largest refugee camp ever since.

Conditions in the Camp

▪️The mass exodus from Myanmar took place practically overnight. When the dust had settled, over 1 million Rohingya had filled the Kutupalong-Balukhali network of camps. Today, more than half of the people living here are children. To make matters worse, the World Food Program has decreased the amount of rations each person gets from $12 to $10 per month, causing widespread hunger and starvation. 

▪️The overcrowding has also made other problems worse, such as poor sanitation, the spread of diseases, the lack of access to clean drinking water, and the outbreak of uncontrollable fires that destroy thousands of shelters every year.

 • We run Rohingya Noor Learning Center, 2 small schools with 60 students and 3 teachers in Cox's bazar refugee camp. We teach our students reading, writing, English, Burmese, math and science. With more funding we would love to add history to the curriculum as well. We have been working in the camp since August 2020, and opened the first school in July 2021 and second school in 2023.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------▪️Recently, with your support, we opened a Tahfizul Qur'an Alhamdulillah where almost 60 Rohingya Orphans and around children are memorizing the Qur'an. SubhanAllah, we have two Hafizs who teach the children day and night. We are paying them modest salaries and can continue this effort with your continued support. Alhamdulillah, we also support a Moulana (Arabic teacher) by providing a modest salary to teach children basic Arabic at the masjid so that children can write Qur'an and understand Qur'an insha'Allah.

Cost Breakdown

Our proposal is for $22,000 to provide the funds we need to keep our schools running for a whole year, and to provide relief for the camp we works. The relief takes the form of food, medicine, shelter, and well digging projects.

Salary for three regular teachers - $450/month, $5400/year
