FREEDOM is a spiritual and emotional 90 minutes documentary film featuring 50 converts from 25 countries over 6 continents in 15 languages combined with stunning footages of some of the most fascinating places and Masjids of Malaysia.
In the wake of a global rise of anti-Muslim sentiments, film directors Julien Drolon & Zara Shafie are giving a voice to a global community of converts during a crucial time when Islam needs to be more understood and appreciated as a religion that is protecting the freedom, rights and dignity of every human being. This unique documentary features 25 men and 25 women from different racial background from countries like Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India, China, Japan, Kenya, England, France, Germany, Poland, Peru, Mexico, Australia and much more. It features entrepreneurs, teachers, actors environmentalists, lawyers etc...- all of them speaking from the very depths of theirs souls on their perspectives on FREEDOM and ISLAM."I thought the film was really great. 3. WHO ARE THE FILM DIRECTORS OF FREEDOM?
Julien Drolon is a French Muslim convert residing in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He is a former International Reporter and singer songwriter. After many years of research on the topic of religion, Julien embraced Islam online in the Philippines in 2012. Since then, he has been involved in many Da'wah projects including New Muslim Care, which caters to converts after their Shahada. Julien is the business development director of an agro business company that offers investment opportunities in Asia.
Zara Shafie is Julien's wife, a Malaysian mother of two boys who holds a Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering. She was a former soprano/jazz singer but after she rediscovered Islam in 2013, she left the music industry. She worked as an event manager for major oil & gas events previously and had left the corporate world to volunteer in da'wah projects.
Together, they created and produced two TV shows in Malaysia "Salam Hari Ahad" in which they interviewed world renowned scholars such as Mufti Menk, Tariq Ramadan, Abdurraheem Green, Muhammad Salah and more as well as "Salam Mualaf" which focused on Malaysian converts and was watched by more than 2 million viewers on TV9. In 2015, they created together Halis Media whose vision is to introduce the pure message of Islam to the world through the most innovative media platforms. FREEDOM is the first not-for-profit project of Halis Media which is behind all the initiatives of FREEDOM - production, directing, marketing, promotion and distribution of the documentary.

FREEDOM: a film that could be the cure to Islamophobia
“FREEDOM”, a documentary film with authentic stories of 50 people who have converted to Islam from 25 countries and that has caused great repercussions in the world, met the audience at Ibn Haldun University. French co-director of the film Julien Drolon and CEO of Halis Media said that one of the main objectives of the film was intended to respond to growing anti-Islamism in the world, especially in Europe.
“FREEDOM,” in the context of its 2018 world tour met the audience at the Ibn Haldun University in Turkey after Malaysia and South Africa. Aiming to find an answer to the question “Is the world free today?”, the film tells the stories and testimonies of 50 people who have converted to Islam. The converts also tell why they choose Islam and their attitudes towards increasing Islamophobia. The film is enriched with images of mosques and religious artifacts in Malaysia.
After it has been screened in Malaysia, South Africa and Turkey Freedom is going to meet audiences in Britain, Australia, New Zealand, The Philippines and Mexico among other countries as Halis Media, the production company who produced Freedom, informed us that the world screening tour of “Freedom” will take place in 10 countries over 5 continents InshaAllah.
French co- director Julien Drolon, who answered questions after the screening at Ibn Haldun University and introduced himself as a convert in his thirties, stated that he and his wife Zara Shafie had decided to make the film two years ago. “We were visiting France and we realized that Islamophobia had increased greatly and spread all over the world. Obviously, non-Muslims know almost nothing about Islam. ” he said.

Drolon realized that people who belonged to different religions and converted to Islam, will have a profound effect while telling the message of Islam. “So we have found people who chose Islam from 25 different countries. The beautiful side of the film is that these people speak about why they chose Islam in their own languages and they convey the true message of Islam to people. Only Allah (SWT) will tell us whether we are successful or not in this. ”
Julien Drolon believes that Islamophobia is linked with racism and that converts are the best Ambassadors of Islam and could greatly contribute to clear misconceptions about Islam and battle Islamophobia. “I chose ‘FREEDOM’ because this is a value that the West constantly uses and cares about. So I wanted to disclose their false perceptions about Islam through a value that they appreciate. So I call it ‘FREEDOM’ pondering about what is the fate of our freedom in choosing Islam? ” He said.

“We can say that Islam gives real freedom. The freedom of Islam is a freedom to save people from oppression. Islam’s vision of freedom is a vision that will save humanity from oppression and make it accessible to Allah, so you can be completely free. We can tell the whole world that Islam is the only source of freedom.”

5. BUDGET SPENT & BUDGET NEEDED NOW
Together, we collected USD$55,000 for the production of the film and the beginning of the tour in South Africa, Turkey, UK and Malaysia. Now, we need your help to keep going and finish our World Screening Tour in 10 countries over 5 continents. Last Ramadan we collected 17 000USD$ on LaunchGood through our very successful campaign "CALL HUMANITY BACK TO ISLAM" that started only in the last 10 days of Ramadan. The minimum that we need now to finish the tour will be USD$8,000 but in reality we believe that we will need much more if we want to screen FREEDOM in at least 3 cities per country with an average of 200 people per screening. In total, our objective is to screen FREEDOM 30 times to at least 3,000 people during this World Screening Tour. At the moment we screened FREEDOM 15 times to more than 1500 people.

I have been Muslim for 10 years and for the first time of my life as a Muslim, my mother who is not yet Muslim came to spend some time in Ramadan with me and my family. She even fasted with us Alhamdulillah.
That's why we were not able to start any campaign before today because I prioritised our time with my mother but even though we have only a few days left in Ramadan we had to get this campaign started as it means a lot to us "Bring Back Islam To The Youth".

Last month, the Co Director of Freedom, Julien Drolon was invited as a panel speaker to discuss the problems and solutions to Islamophobia in the West at the Haci Bayram Veli University in Ankara.
The Conference commemorated the 3 years anniversary of the massacre of 51 Brothers in a Mosque in Christchurch which happened on the 15th of March 2019. The Conference was moderated by Lauren Booth.
