Empowering Imams and Communities 

The Imam Development Program launched Project Qurbani in 2021 and has designed the project to benefit some of the most vulnerable communities in Africa through the hands of an Imam. As an organisation whose primary focus is the upliftment and empowerment of Imams, we take great pride in being able to deliver a unique Qurbani experience aimed at strengthening the position of the Imam. Ultimately, creating a stronger link between the Imam, the Masjid committee, and the communities they serve.

2023: Qurbani Across 8 Countries Through the Hand of the Imam

You can empower an Imam and his community through your Qurbani, facilitated by Imams in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, Malawi, Tanzania and Lesotho.

The Qurbani Process:

Step 1: Imam secures your goat locally

Imams purchases the animals from local herdsman in an effort to support their businesses. This also allows for the Qurbani to take place in the village of the Imam.

Step 2: Voucher distribution

Imams makes use of a voucher system to ensure an easy and professional distribution of meat.

Step 3: All rites observed by the Imam on the days of Eid

The Imam and his team oversee the entire Qurbani process.

Step 4: Packaging and distributing

Imams package and distribute meat parcels to all those in their communities, further elevating the position of the Imam.

2022: The Impact of Your Qurbani

Meat is a luxury for many.

Following the distribution of the IDP Qurban at the Masjid, I ventured into door-to-door service, where I came across this grandma, who is now in her 100s and one of the founders of Nkhulambe Masjid. She asked me, "What have you brought me, my son?" I said, "This is meat." "What?" she inquired once more. And I repeat, "meat." She stated that I had asked you again because I had forgotten how it tasted. I can't even remember when I last ate meat." (Qurbani 2022 Recipient)

When you empower an Imam, you empower a community.

“This is the first time goats are being slaughtered at our own Masjid. It’s about 20 years now and to me it was like a miracle to hear that. People in my community are so thankful to IDP for considering them in the Qurbani program. Among the beneficiaries are; the elderly,  the poor, families living with orphans, the bereaved families and many more. Qurbani program at Noor Madrassa will never be forgotten as this is the first time the program of such to be hosted at the place."

Imam Iqra Taiti From Machinga, Malawi

Over the past few months, Imam Iqra faced many hardships and loss. His 8 year old son sadly passed away and not too long after, his beloved wife passed away too. Despite these losses, Imam Iqra remained positive and committed to his community in a way we are in complete awe of. Imam Iqra said, ”This duty of being an Imam, it has no holiday. Be it in bad or good situations. This keeps me motivated. When my community sees me, they have seen their leader.” Through the hands of Imam Iqra, his community will be the recipients of Qurbani this year, Alhamdulillah. 

Imam Dawood Malenga From Ndola, Zambia.

Meet Imam Dawood. He is the breadwinner for his family of 11. Before the IDP, Imam Dawood and his family were really struggling. There were days where they had one or no meals at all. After joining the IDP, not only is he and his family having three meals a day, but he is now a business owner of a Chicken Farm. The IDP filled a huge gap in his life, allowing him to focus on Dawah without financial worry. Through the hands of Imam Dawood, his community will be the recipients of Qurbani this year, Alhamdulillah.

Meet Imam Abdallah Naika From Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

An unforgettable lesson from the life of Imam Abdallah is that when there is a will, Allah will make a way! He went from not knowing what Gmail is, to having access to any and every tool he needs to be the best Imam he can be. Through the hands of Imam Abdallah, his community will be the recipients of Qurbani this year, Alhamdulillah. 

Who are the Imam Development Program?

The Imam Development Program (IDP) was established in South Africa in 2014 with the aim to assist currently employed Imams and community leaders to empower, develop and refine their skills. We believe through developing effective community leaders; we can transform entire communities. Over the past 9 years the IDP has directly improved the lives of more than 400 Imams across 9 countries namely,  South  Africa,  Lesotho, Swaziland,  Malawi,  Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana and Tanzania.  Through our training,  we have enhanced the effectiveness of our Imams to better serve their communities. And through our Imams we can touch the lives of over 2,000 000 people each year.
